Classes at Clay and Steel
Intro Classes (for new blacksmiths)
It is recommended but not required that you take a few intro classes to build up your skills before taking the intermediate courses.
Bronze Bracelet - Gorgeous and “easy”! This is the gentlest introduction forging possible. You will make a beautiful wearable bracelets from copper and bronze. Just pay attention to your heat and don’t melt it! Polish it to a bright bronze or lean into the rich oxidation colors that can only be achieved in the forge. Great for gifts and satisfying to wear.
Bronze Spoon - Tests your restraint, tests your attention to detail. Good follow up to the bracelet class. These are legitimately useful as a tea spoon.
Sword Box Cutter - A slick blade. Could belong to Ezio Auditore. Sharp, svelte and less physically demanding than forging a huge RR spike.
Railroad Spike Knife - Classic blade with a distinct profile and a twist! Literally you have to twist it, one of the many fun steps in this 6 hour class. This is an excellent class to take with friends as teamwork is encouraged and sometimes necessary.
Intermediate Classes (returning students)
CBA Classes- A Blacksmithing Education
The CBA classes focus less on a fun single project and heavily lean into teaching the skills needed to be a blacksmith as a hobbyist or more. Build up core proficiencies and learn to work independently.
Youth who join the California Blacksmith Association are welcome in this course. Recommended age 13+. Some youth may require a parent to be present.
Unique Team Building Events
Team Builds by the Richmond Shore
Come by Richmond during the workday or on a weekend you choose. Team Building classes include activities customized to your team’s abilities. We take pride in letting everyone join in, including chaperones or bored bus drivers.
Have crane arm, will travel.
Clay and Steel’s modified Ford Ranger allows our smithy to take to the road. We have attended Open Sauce, Maker Faire (third time in 2025!), and many on-site Gift Shows and open-air Markets. We can swing hammers, show smithing processes, speak about our jobs/lives, and forge gifts for team members. We also are set up to teach limited courses on-site, safely, with insurance, and all according to any fire safety practices you may have. Contact us for more…
