Safe and engaging

Team builds for teams up to 12

We run Team Builds that let them make

Celeste and her crew teach safety and control first. In our shop or at your place, your team will then get to try their hand at the life-affirming art of hammering hot metal. We have many stations, projects, professional blacksmiths and a very sweet shop cat.

Celeste taught team builds and classes at the Crucible for 12 years. Here’s part of her crew at Maker Faire 2024, representing themselves now.

12 years experience

Our sessions can include:

  • forging in a safe environment, always.

  • flashy team-striking, where multiple sledgehammers build up a sweat.

  • getting small and detailed with jewelry or thin sheet metal.

  • making a take-home project to gloat about.

  • No Fire sessions where only “gentle” hammering is required and we taste wine

  • Games, Trivia, or Competition between our pro smiths… other ideas too!

Projects, classes, or “just for fun” events, we can swing a hammer at it without missing.

Have crane arm, will travel.

Clay and Steel’s modified Ranger allows our smithy to take to the road.

We have attended Open Sauce, Maker Faire (Dale loves us!), and many on-site Gift Shows, Banquets, the Symphony, and open-air Markets. We can swing hammers, show smithing processes, speak about our skills, and/or forge gifts for team members. We also are set up to teach limited courses on-site, safely, with insurance, and all according to any fire safety practices you may have.

It sounds dangerous but our setup is minimal, non-toxic, and safe. Hammering is bliss.

Where

We are located right off the freeway on Bayview, either I-80 or I-580. Parking is plentiful and free. Low traffic area, but not many services.

The Building

Team Builds are mostly indoors. Weather/project permitting we can fire up our coal forges, which allow more fire (read: fun) and let teams wander in or outside. The bay keeps temperatures mild, the shore is 1/4 mile walk, and the large building interior stays dentist’s office cool in summer. There are cats and large in-progress art projects built by diverse teams with eclectic music choices.

Time

We recommend a minimum of 2.5 - 3 hours booked. More complex projects like blades should assume 4-5 hours. Mandatory safety lessons take about 30-45 mins, depending.

What we can do

We always teach safety, tools, positioning and technique. We can teach decorative items, bracelets, knives, corsets, hammers, dragons, bottle openers etc. Optional: Tell us your hopes/dreams or pick from our standard roster: Clay and Steel classes

Cost

$135-$200pp is average depending on materials/time.

Our shop is cute, has easy free bus/van parking, and is by the beautiful shoreline in Richmond.
