Artist Statement
My aim is to uncover the roots of the social structures in our society. I use literature, history, and psychology to discover how the past shapes the way we behave in the present.
There is a duality to much of my work. This is because I wish to explore the many facets of our social lives. Often, I may praise our adherence to tradition and to the structures we have created, while simultaneously criticizing our rigid and short sighted boundaries.
Much of my work until now has focused on feminist ideas and the questioning of gender roles, but this is just a small part of what I wish to explore.
When I create my work I start with either an image or an idea. As build a visual image, I also build upon the concept. I work intuitively, often making the decisions and then later questioning the meaning behind those decisions. In this way, my process is a visual and conceptual exploration. I build expressively, using materials that feel natural to me. I prefer very humble materials. I prefer stoneware to porcelain, steel to silver, and cotton to silk. I enjoy using materials without intrinsic value and supplying the value in their meaning.
